Oreos are vegan as they do not contain any animal-derived ingredients. However, if you have a dairy allergy, you should know they could be cross-contact with milk.
Another great option to use instead of Oreos is the Back to Nature Classic Creme Cookies.
These cookies work just as well as the classic Oreo, but they are non-GMO and have no hydrogenated oils or high fructose corn syrup.
My kids and I made these on a rainy afternoon and had so much fun. If your kids are like mine, they have a short attention span.
Making these Oreo Bats takes the perfect amount of time, about 10 minutes to make several bats!
I hope you and your kids have as much fun as we did putting these together and just as much fun gobbling them up!

📖 Variations and Substitutions
Candy Eyes: You can use candy eyes if you’re not vegan and don’t want to make these eyeballs. However, store-bought candy eyes contain gelatin if you’re vegan or kosher.
Dip in Chocolate: If you want to make this Halloween treat a little extra fancy, you can dip the tops of the cookies in melted chocolate! Just remove one side of the cookie for the wings before doing this!
Do I have to use Oreos?-You don’t have to use Oreos; any chocolate cream cookie will work!
👩🏻🍳 How to Make Oreo Bats
- Twist the cookie to separate the two chocolate cookies. The cream filling will usually stick mostly to one side.
- With a butter knife, scrape half of the cream off the cookie. Divide that cream into two, and roll into two small balls. Gently flatten with your finger. These two rounds will become the white of the bat’s eyes.
- Place a mini chocolate chip in the center of the two white rounds. Now you have two googly eyes!
- With the chocolate cookie that doesn’t have any cream, carefully break it in half. It can be a bit tricky to get the perfect break. If it’s not the perfect break halfway down, use the butter knife to scrape a little cookie off the center to try to even them out.
- Make two dots with the icing gel on the center of the unbroken cookie, and draw a smile.
- Press the googly eyes on each dot. Using the cream on the other side of the cookie as glue, press the two cookie halves on either side to create the wings, rounded end up.
That’s it! How easy is that? Kids of any age can make this cute treat!
📝 Expert Tips
- To get even bat wings, center your two hands around the cookie.
- Leave enough cream on the underside of the cookie to attach the wings.
- If you use store-bought candy Google eyes, use the decorating gel to help them stick.
- Use the bats as cupcake toppers, as I did in these Vegan Halloween Cupcakes!
