There are so many delicious fruits to try, so why not work through the alphabet to discover something new! These fruits that start with an E range from sweet to sour, exotic to ordinary! This list tells you everything you need to know about each fruit, including how to enjoy them, and the vitamins and minerals in each one.

I’ve been working my way through the alphabet to discover new and exciting produce. I started with my articles 46 Vegetables that Start With F, 51 Foods That Start with O, 22 Fruits that Start with N, and now I’m on fruits that start with an E. While there aren’t quite as many fruits that start with e, there were some new ones that I discovered! From berries to apples, pears, and exotic fruits, there’s something for everyone. Each has a unique set of health benefits and ways to enjoy them.

Elderberry Fruit
Elderberries grow in the North American continent as well as parts of Central America. There are a variety of types of elderberries and not all are edible. They have a deep purple-blue color. The flavor is rather bitter if eaten raw. But they can be cooked and made into jams, jellies, or pies. Elderberries are most commonly found and used as a supplement in the form of gummies or as liquid drops. They have a variety of health benefits. They are high in fiber, vitamin C, and antioxidants. Taking an elderberry supplement may help with inflammation, and stress, help support your immune system and protect your heart. Before picking elderberries, and eating them raw, be aware that elderberry flowers and unripe elderberries are toxic. Be sure to consult your doctor before taking any supplements.
Emu Berry Fruit
The emu berry grows on a bush in Australia. During the months of April-September, the shrub grows berries. The small red berry has a sweet flavor. There are many health benefits to enjoying emu berries. The leaves and roots can treat a variety of ailments including headaches, and fatigue among others. Enjoy them raw or make into a jam or jelly.
Evergreen Huckleberry
The Evergreen Elderberry is grown in British Columbia and California along the Cascade Mountains. They grow on a shrub that can reach up to 6-12 feet tall. The berries look a lot like blueberries. They are their sweetest and most delicious after the first frost. They are often used in baked goods such as cakes and muffins.
Eggplant
While often thought of as a vegetable, eggplant is actually a fruit because of the seeds that are found inside. The flavor is subtle and savory. They grow from the branches that grow up to several feet high. When growing eggplant in your garden, use stakes to allow the eggplant to grow tall without the branches falling from the heavy fruit. Place in full sunlight in your garden. Eggplant is rich in antioxidants such as vitamins A and C. They are also high on polyphenols which help your cells process sugar and can reduce your risk of diabetes. There are so many ways to prepare eggplant such as in dips like babaganoush, or in curries, stir-fries, or roasted.
Elephant Apple
The elephant apple fruit is native to China and tropical parts of Asia. It grows on a large shrub. The fruit is large with a diameter of 2-5 inches. The flavor is sour, bitter, and fibrous. It’s made into chutneys, curries, jams, and jellies. The fruit is eaten by elephants, monkeys, and deer. They are rich in vitamin C, vitamin B, vitamin E, potassium, healthy fats, amino acids, and protein.
Emu Apple Fruit
Emu Apples like Emu Berries are grown in the Australian outback. They grow to 2-4 centimeters in diameter and have an inedible seed in the center. While they are called apples they are more like a berry in their size, but they taste like a sweet and spicy apples. Emu apples are ripe when they turn green in color with some red hues. They are high in antioxidants, even more so than blueberries. They can be made into jams, chutneys, pies, fruit salads, and more.
Enterprise Apple
The Enterprise Apple was developed to resist diseases. It’s a combination of McIntosh, Golden Delicious, and Rome Beauty. They have a deep red color and ripen in October. It can be eaten fresh, or it can be baked in pies. It has a rather thick skin, which makes it tougher to enjoy fresh. Apples are rich in vitamins A and C.
European Pear
There are many different varieties of pears. You’ve likely heard of Asian Pears, but what are European Pears? If you are familiar with Bartlett pears, then you are also familiar with European pears, as they are one type of European pear. There are many common pear varieties that fall under the umbrella of a European pear, including bartlett, Williams pears, and anjou pears. Pears are an excellent source of folate, vitamin C, copper, and potassium. You can eat them raw, or bake them in your favorite desserts.
Eastern Hawthorn Fruit
These berry-like fruits are grown on shrubs. They can be found in parts of the United States, specifically the Southeast ranging from Virginia through Florida. This fruit is specifically high in vitamins and minerals and was used for its medicinal properties. It was used for heart, kidney, and digestive disorders to name a few. The Eastern Hawthorn contains antioxidants that help fight free radicals and reduce the signs of aging. They have a nice apple-like flavor. They can be made into jams and jellies, desserts, or added to tea or other drinks.
Earlygold Mango
As the name suggests the earlygold mango ripens early in the season from May-June. This type of mango tree was originally grown in Florida. The fruit that it bears is like other mangos. It is yellow in color and produces an oblong fruit with a sweet mango flavor. Mangos are a good source of vitamins A, C, and K, as well as potassium, beta-carotene, folate, and choline. You can enjoy them sliced and eaten raw with the skin removed, or add to your favorite baking recipes, smoothies, or fruit salads.
Entawak
The entawak fruit has a spiny yellow outer layer. This layer helps to protect the fruit as well as aid in its ripening. They are about 3-4 inches in size. Inside the fruit, you’ll find bright yellow or red bulbs around the seeds. It grows in a tropical climate in Indonesia, and parts of Malaysia. It is related to jackfruit. The flesh has a sweet taste that compares to squash. The seeds of the entawak are also enjoyed and eaten. Seeds can be roasted and eaten, or ground to use as a spice in cooking. They contain antioxidants, fiber, riboflavin, and thiamin. They help in detoxifying the body and reduce the risks of some forms of cancer.
Etrog
The etrog is a yellow citrus fruit that looks like a wrinkled lemon. It is larger with a specific point at the top. It has a thick rind. They are also called yellow citrons. Etrog is grown in the Mediterranean (Sicily, Crete, Corsica, Greece, and Israel). It is used during the holiday of Sukkot in which it is held and waved during prayer. It has a citrus flavor. You can use it as you would a lemon, or make it into a jam, cookies, or cake.
Egg Fruit
Eggfruit is a bright orange fruit. It is named egg fruit because its shape, as well as its texture, is similar to a hard-boiled egg yolk. They are grown in the Caribbean, and Central America. Eggfruit ripen in late fall. They are a good source of beta-carotene, and vitamin A. These nutrients can help support your immune system, and protect against vision loss. It has a thick texture that can be used as a substitute for sugar or to create a vegan mousse. You can add their pulp to your smoothies, custards, pies, ice cream, and jams.
Emblica
Emblica, also known as the Indian gooseberry is a small green berry that is native to India. Today it also grows in Sri Lanka, Southeast Asia, China, Malaysia, and Pakistan. It is used in ayurvedic medicine. The fruit is used to treat the common cold, fever, stomach upset, and more. The easiest way to eat the fruit is to eat it raw. It has a rather sour taste, so it is suggested to sprinkle it with salt to help balance the sour flavor. You can also juice the fruit or create a chutney. It can be bought in powder form if you’d rather reap the benefits in without trying to find the fruit.
Elands Sour Fig
The Elands Sour Fig is a succulent plant that grows close to the ground. It has thick leaves and a bright purple flower. The fruit that it produces can be made into a delicious jam. The juice from the leaves and flowers has been used as a mouthwash, lotion, and as antiseptic wash. The juice from the leaves can be used to relieve pain from burns and sores.
Ephedra
The ephedra is a low-growing shrub with long scaly leaves that produces small red berries. It was used in China and India to treat colds, fever, headaches, coughing, and wheezing. In 2004, the United States banned supplements that used ephedra. These supplements were for weight loss, increased energy, and increased athletic performance. The risks associated with ephedrine found in studies done in the US outweighed the possible benefits. Ephedrine, found in ephedra can cause anxiety, dizziness, insomnia, and other complications. However, Ephedra nevadensis, is a type of ephedra plant that does not contain ephedrine. It is used with Mormon tea and is safe to drink.
