These air fryer apple chips are crisp and easy to make! They are the perfect after-school snack or healthy plant-based dessert.

These air fryer apple chips were the first recipe I made using my air fryer.
I was on the fence for a while, deciding if buying an air fryer would be a good investment or just another kitchen appliance shoved in the back of my cupboard.
I’ve never been a big fan of fried foods, and I don’t generally use oil when I’m cooking, so I wasn’t sure if I needed or would use an air fryer.
When I did a little research, I realized that an air fryer had more uses than making frozen french fries. It is a quick and easy appliance that can make crispy food faster without needing oil!
After much internal debate, I was too curious not to try it. I bought this Dash Compact Air Fryer. It wasn’t too much of a cost commitment, and I had a gift card! So, why not!?

🍽 Tools and Equipment
I like this Dash Air Fryer because it’s small and compact. It doesn’t take up much space in my full countertops and easily fits in my cupboard.
Since it is small, you won’t be able to make large batches simultaneously. If you have a more prominent family or cook for a crowd, I recommend the Go Wise 5.8 Qt Air Fryer.
It has eight cooking presets that help you take the guesswork out of how to air fry certain foods. It also includes an alarm that will go off at 5, 10, and 15-minute increments to remind you to shake the basket.
I highly recommend getting one if you don’t already have a mandoline. It makes slicing vegetables and fruits a breeze, with even cuts every time. You’ll get perfect ⅛-inch apple slices with a mandoline.
📋 Instructions
Step 1: Wash, core, and thinly slice apples ⅛ inch thick using a mandoline or sharp knife. Sprinkle the apple slices with cinnamon and salt in a large bowl and toss evenly.
Step 2: Preheat the air fryer to 300 F. Place the thin slices of apples in the air fryer in a single layer. Dry the apples by cooking them in the air fryer at 300 F for 20 minutes. Toss and flip the apples every 5 minutes making sure the apples cook evenly, and the ones in the middle are tossed to the side. Apples will begin to shrivel. If the apples aren’t yet dry after 20 minutes, cook in the air fryer basket in 5-minute increments until all moisture is removed. If the apples seem to be burning, lower the temperature to 275 F.
Step 3: Turn the air fryer oven up to 325 degrees Fahrenheit. Crisp the apples for 6 minutes to get crispy chips. Toss the slices every 2 minutes.

There are tons of varieties of apples to choose from. Use your favorite apples. These apple chips are nutrient-dense snacks for those following a low-calorie diet, such as Weight Watchers.
You can core the apples if you like, but it is unnecessary. Just be sure to remove all of the seeds.
👩🏻🍳 Expert Tips
- The type of apple you choose will determine the result of your chips. You will have a softer chip if you choose an apple with bright white flesh. Use a crisp apple such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp for best results.
- Take your time to dry out the apples on low heat. The low heat dries the apples out, and the high heat makes them crisp.
- Do not overlap the apple slices.
- Alternatively, use a dehydrator to dry the apples first before crisping them.
- Be sure to toss and move the apple slices around during the cooking process so that they cook and bake evenly.
- Use a mandolin to slice the apples very thin and evenly. Aim for ⅛ of an inch thick for each slice.
- The best way to wash apples is to soak them in water and vinegar to remove the wax and pesticide.
- Use organic apples if possible. Apples are one of the most highly sprayed produce items and contain a lot of pesticides.
- Use aluminum foil in the air fryer to help with easy clean-up.
🍽 How to Serve
- Make Apple Nachos: Place the crunchy chips on a serving tray, drizzle with almond butter, and top with raisins and dried cranberries.
- Top with Ice Cream: Stack the apple chips on top of one another and top with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
- Peanut Butter Dipping Sauce: Serve with a side of peanut butter for dipping for a high-protein snack!
- Maple Syrup: Serve with a side of maple of syrup for dipping for an extra sweet treat!
❄️ How to Store and Keep
Allow the chips to cool completely before storing them at room temperature. If they are not entirely cooled, then they will lose their crispness. You can place them in an airtight plastic bag, but if you do that, keep them out of the way on the countertop so they don’t get crushed and broken. As an alternative, you can store them in an airtight container. They will keep on the countertop for 5-7 days.
