When my sweet tooth comes calling, but I want something healthy and nutritious, I make these super simple air fryer apples.
They are a simple and quick snack or dessert that is low in calories and fat and high in nutritional value! Plus, I use just a touch of maple syrup for sweetness. If you’re avoiding sugar altogether, you can leave it out.
The result is a soft apple pie-like filling without the buttery high-calorie crust!
Serve with a sprinkle of cinnamon or top with vegan vanilla ice cream or vegan whipped cream! This recipe has become a family favorite!
I know it will become a staple dessert that you’ll come back to again and again throughout the autumn months and beyond!

🥣 Ingredients and Notes
Granny Smith Apples: I love the tart flavor of Granny Smith Apples combined with cinnamon and sugar. It’s the best apple to use in an apple pie! This is why this recipe tastes so much like gooey apple pie filling. However, feel free to use any apples you have at home. Some apples are softer than others and won’t work as well. For example, red delicious apples have soft flesh. My favorite apples include Pink Lady, Honeycrisp, Jonagold, or Braeburn.
Canola Oil: A light and neutral oil help the apples to bake up crispy.
Maple Syrup: For a touch of added sweetness, add maple syrup. It’s a more natural sweetener than white sugar and is vegan-friendly if you don’t have maple syrup, use organic brown sugar.
Cinnamon or Apple Pie Spice: If you have apple pie spice feel free to use it! Apple pie spice combines cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, allspice, and cloves. If you don’t have it, use cinnamon!
Butter: After the apples are baked, some butter coats them and makes them taste decadent.
Cinnamon Sugar: Combine a teaspoon of sugar and a ¼ teaspoon of cinnamon to sprinkle on top of the baked apples before serving.
👩🏻🍳 How to Make Air Fryer Apples
- Cut and core the apples. If you prefer, remove the skin. Then chop the apples into equal size chunks. The best way to quickly slice apples is to use an apple corer!
- Add the apples to a large bowl. Top with canola oil, cinnamon, and maple syrup. Toss to coat evenly on all sides of the apples.
- Place the apples in your air fryer in a single layer. This allows the hot air to circulate and cook the apples evenly. Bake at 375 degrees F for a cook time of 12-15 minutes. Toss at the 6-minute mark.
- Transfer the apples to a serving bowl or individual bowls. Sprinkle with cinnamon sugar. Top with homemade caramel sauce, vanilla ice cream, or whipped cream! Enjoy!
❓Recipe FAQS
The best apples to use in an air fryer are those that will hold firm and not fall apart. You want an apple with dense flesh, not too soft. I recommend the same apples you would use in an apple pie to use in the air fryer. Those include Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, Jonagold, Golden Delicious, or Braeburn.
It’s unnecessary to air dry apples before adding them to the air fryer, but if you choose to air dry your apples, slice them into thin round slices and cut out the core. Hang on a string so that the apple slices are not touching. Then place it next to a wood stove or fire. Allow them to dry for up to 3 hours.
When you want a crispy finish to your food, the oil will help that process along. However, don’t use cooking spray that comes in an aerosol can. These types of sprays will chip the finish of your air fryer! Instead, use liquid oil, or invest in an oil mister!
Allow the apples to cool completely. Transfer to an airtight container. Store in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
📝 Expert Air Fryer Tips
- Don’t use a non-stick cooking spray, as these tend to cause chipping inside your air fryer basket. Instead, use an oil mister.
- Don’t overcrowd the basket. Place the apples in a single layer.
- Toss the apples halfway through the cooking time so that they cook evenly on all sides.
- If you want crispy apples, spray them with some oil halfway through.
- Cut your apples into large chunks.
