Confession time…I’m a coffee addict. I wasn’t always this way. In fact, for a very long time I didn’t drink coffee at all. I didn’t start drinking coffee on a regular basis until I had kid number two.

Then it was all downhill from there. As an exhausted mom with an infant and a toddler, caffeine became my best friend.

I always loved the flavor of coffee. When I was a kid I ate coffee yogurt, coffee ice cream, and coffee flavored candy.

Now that I think about it, it’s quite perplexing why my mother allowed me to eat these coffee flavored things, but she didn’t seem too concerned about it, and I think I turned out okay.

It was winter when I was on maternity leave with my second. A Starbucks popped up with a drive through a mile down the street from where we lived.

Soon after it became my regular routine to cruise through the drive through after I dropped my oldest off at preschool. My regular back then was a vanilla soy latte.

I started to realize I was spending quite a lot of money each week to get my Starbucks latte fix. So, then I became obsessed with making the perfect latte at home. Only thing was I didn’t have an espresso machine.

Trying to Make Lattes at Home

When I started looking into buying myself an espresso machine I was completely turned off. Those things are expensive! But my latte obsession was strong.

I opted for a Mr. Coffee Espresso Machine at $40. I also got myself a stainless steel milk frothing jug and tamper. To be honest, my lattes were not great.

The espresso machine was difficult for me to use. I couldn’t seem to get the milk frothing right, and the part I loved the most about my Starbucks lattes was the foam on the top.

Then I got myself a milk frother. This simplified things a bit, but my latte didn’t have that strong espresso flavor that I loved.

After awhile, I just stopped trying to make the perfect latte at home and instead opted for regular coffee with a touch of almond milk. As my son began to sleep through the night and life began to settle into a new normal with two small kids, I decided I needed to stop relying on caffeine.

After several weeks of slowly weaning myself off of it, I still missed that comforting coffee flavor in the morning. Now I’ve turned to decaf. I still get my coffee fix without all the caffeine.

Discovering Oat Milk Lattes

Fast forward a few years later, I discovered oat milk lattes after meeting a colleague at a coffee shop! OMG! I found my new favorite way to enjoy coffee, and oat milk lattes became my new obsession.

Lucky for me, I learned a few things in my trials and failures at making lattes at home. Now, I’ve come up with a simple way to enjoy oat milk lattes at home that doesn’t require any fancy equipment.

I’ve also come up with 5 different flavor combinations so you can enjoy a plain oat milk latte, or with vanilla, pumpkin spice, gingerbread, or mocha for a twist!

If I were to do it all over again I would have paid more money and gotten myself a Nespresso Machine.

I don’t have one at home (fingers crossed I get one for Christmas), but I’ve used them when I’ve been at various hotels and the quality of the espresso combined with it’s ease of use, and affordable price point makes it an all around excellent choice if you’re a coffee fanatic like myself.

However, I’m assuming you don’t have any fancy equipment, but still want to make an oat milk latte, so while all these tools are nice to have depending on your set-up at home, they’re not necessary.

I’m going to show you how I make an oat milk latte at home using my trusty Cuisinart coffee maker, and my Blender. You can use any coffee maker or blender you have at home. Anything will work just fine for this super simple recipe.

How to Make an Oat Milk Latte – Step by Step

Step 1: Brew your coffee. You can choose to brew your coffee using a standard coffee maker, Keurig, espresso machine, Nespresso, or a classic French Press espresso maker.

Step 2: Heat one cup of oat milk on the stove. Whisk together ingredients See below for recommended measurements for each type of oat milk latte. Heat on medium until warm and begins to thicken.

Step 3: Remove from heat. Pour into your blender. Blend until a nice foam forms at the top. (Note: I use my personal travel size blender, but you can use any blender you have at home). You can also use a frothing wand if you have one.

Step 4: Pour your coffee or espresso into your mug. (Note: Depending on how strong you like your latte you can use one or two shots of espresso, or if brewing your coffee I fill my cup halfway full).

Step 5: Pour oat milk over the coffee. Skim foam and spoon over the top of your latte. Enjoy!

What is an oat milk latte?

An oat milk latte is a coffee drink that is typically made with espresso and oat milk. Oat milk is a dairy-free milk suitable for those that are vegan, or have a dairy intolerance. It is made by blending together oats and water, and then straining to get a smooth and creamy texture.

What does an oat milk latte taste like?

Oat milk thickens and gets creamy when heated, which is why it’s perfect for lattes and coffee. It tastes very similar to a dairy latte because of this reason. It also has a slightly sweet taste similar to milk which is why oat milk lattes have become a popular dairy free latte option in recent years.

Does Starbucks have oat milk?

Recently, Starbucks has added oat milk as a dairy free option. They use the Oatly brand of oat milk to make their oat milk lattes. As of writing this post, oat milk is available in US Starbucks locations.

I hope you give these oat milk lattes a try at home. If they are your new obsession, like mine, you’ll save a lot of money making your own delicious, creamy and flavor latte at home!
