Why This Recipe Works
Healthy Valentine’s Day Treat: Made with natural ingredients, and no added sugar, this cute snack is just the thing to bring a little non-candy fun to the table on Valentine’s Day!
Quick and Easy: If you need a simple snack in a hurry, then this is it! All you need to do is cut the strawberries and mix the yogurt!
Ingredients and Notes
Fresh Strawberries: Depending on how many people you plan to serve I recommend 20-30 strawberries. I also recommend purchasing organic if possible. Strawberries are on the top of the EWG’s dirty dozen list of foods with the most pesticide exposure.
Dairy-Free Plain Yogurt: There are many different types of dairy-free yogurt available. While any yogurt will do, I recommend using yogurt that is thick in texture and high in fat. This will help the yogurt stay thick and perfect for dipping. Coconut yogurt works great!
Freeze Dried Strawberries: The freeze-dried strawberries are added to the yogurt to give it a strawberry flavor without adding refined sugar.
Instructions
Step 1: Wash and dry strawberries.
Step 2: Remove the tops and then slice the strawberries top in a “V” creating a heart shape. Don’t cut down too far, just enough to create the heart shape.
Step 3: Place the toothpicks on the ends.
Step 4: In a small mixing bowl, fold together the yogurt, freeze-dried strawberries, and optional maple syrup. Keep the yogurt in the refrigerator until ready to serve. Dip needs to be served cold.
Recipe FAQS
No! If you are not vegan or lactose intolerant then feel free to use regular yogurt. I recommend high-fat plain Greek yogurt.
Remove the stem of the strawberry using a sharp knife, but not cutting the whole top off. You want to leave the arches of the top of the strawberries intact. Using the knife remove the stem by cutting in a “V.” Then Cut a larger “V” that’s not too deep. You want to cut away just enough to resemble a heart shape.
Store the strawberries in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Store the yogurt in a separate airtight container in the refrigerator. The strawberries will keep for up to 3 days, and the dip will keep for up to 5 days.
Expert Tips
- Be sure to wash the strawberries thoroughly and pat them dry before cutting.
- Don’t cut the V shape too deep in the strawberry.
- Use organic strawberries if possible.
- If you want your dip to be thicker, add a teaspoon of corn starch, and whisk it together.
- For a thinner dip add a tablespoon of almond milk.
- For a sweeter dip, use vanilla yogurt.
Variations
Chocolate Dip: Melt dark chocolate chips in the microwave in 30-second increments and stir the melted chocolate. Dip the tops of the strawberries in the chocolate, and set them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Refrigerate until chocolate has set. Serve!
Cut in Half: Stretch your servings further by cutting each heart shape strawberry in half.
Make a Festive Valentine’s Day Fruit Tray: Serve the strawberry hearts with other fresh fruit and a yogurt or chocolate dip at the center.
