🥣 Lemon Smoothie Ingredients
Lemon: You’ll need one whole lemon for this recipe. You’ll use the zest and juice of one small lemon.
Frozen Mango and Pineapple: With lots of tart lemon flavor you need some natural sweetener to balance it out, mango and pineapple do the trick.
Banana: Use a ripe or frozen banana sliced into chunks. This adds additional sweetness and also improves the creaminess of the smoothie.
Unsweetened Almond Milk: With all the sweetness of the fruit, you don’t need sweetened almond milk. I prefer to use unsweetened plain almond milk, rather than vanilla, so more of the tropical flavors shine through with this smoothie recipe.
Maple Syrup (optional): After you taste your smoothie, if you think it needs a bit of extra sugar to balance the tart lemon, you can add a tablespoon of maple syrup.
📋 Step by Step Instructions
Step 1: Add the almond milk, frozen pineapple, frozen mango, and banana to a high-speed blender.
Step 2: Zest and juice one whole lemon, be sure to remove the seeds. Add the zest and fresh lemon juice to the blender.
Step 3: Blend on high until all the frozen fruit is combined. Taste, and add the maple syrup or agave if you think it needs to be sweeter.
Step 4: Pour into a glass. Garnish with a wedge of a lemon, and enjoy!
❓ Recipe FAQS
When you’re making your lemon smoothie, you do not want to add the entire lemon. Adding the whole lemon will add the seeds and rind to your smoothie, and neither appetizing. Instead, you want to use the best parts of the lemon which include the zest, and the juice. First, zest the lemon using a zester, then cut your lemon in half and juice using a citrus juicer that removes the seeds.
Lemons have numerous health benefits. Adding them to your smoothie can help boost your immune system thanks to vitamin C. It also improves heart health and can help to lower your cholesterol. The fiber found in lemons can help to improve digestive health.
If you would like a thicker smoothie substitute ½ a cup of plain coconut milk yogurt, and only add ½ a cup of almond milk. You can also choose to swap coconut milk for almond milk for a richer and creamier texture. Note that this will also increase the fat and calories.
Add the smoothie to a small bowl. Top with coconut flakes, fresh granola, and fresh fruit such as blueberries, raspberries, or strawberries.
📖 Variations
- If you want your smoothie to have a deeper lemon color add a ½ teaspoon of ground turmeric. It will not only give your smoothie a bright and beautiful hue but will also add health benefits such as improved heart health.
- If you want to give this smoothie a boost of protein, add a scoop of vanilla protein powder, or 2 tablespoons of hemp seeds, chia seeds, or flax seeds.
