These super easy vegan French toast sticks will become your go-to weekend breakfast! So simple and quick, and this recipe only requires a few pantry ingredients! They’re crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and have a hint of cinnamon! I’ll show you how to prepare them 3 ways: in the air fryer, on the griddle, and baked in the oven!

I don’t know about you, but French toast sticks bring me right back to my childhood!
I recall my mom pulling out frozen French toast sticks and popping them in the toaster oven! While those were not the most nutritious they sure were delicious as a kid!
On the weekends, my kids usually ask me to make them one of my vegan pancake recipes! They particularly love my vegan whole wheat pancakes because they are so versatile! We can throw in bananas, chocolate chips, or anything else we want to use to mix it up!
When my husband is inspired to make breakfast, he makes them French toast. But he makes it for he and the boys the traditional way drenched in an egg and milk.
I couldn’t just let him go on making traditional French toast for the kids without trying out my own version.
In a mission to prove to them all that vegan French toast was just as good as regular, I came up with this simple plant-based breakfast recipe!
I bring to you the easiest, and most fun way to enjoy breakfast!
This French toast is made in the air fryer, but could easily be made stovetop or in the oven. See alternative directions below.

Recipe Ingredients and Notes
Vegan Bread: Use your favorite vegan sandwich bread. I prefer to use whole wheat or whole grain bread for the added fiber and nutrition, but as you can see, this recipe used white bread.
Almond Milk: You can opt for another plant-based milk if you prefer. I used unsweetened almond milk. I recommend using an unsweetened plant-milk to reduce added sugars.
Cinnamon: A touch of cinnamon gives this vegan French toast a hint of warm spice!
Vanilla Extract: A small amount of vanilla brings out the flavors of the cinnamon, and a hint of sweetnenss.
Coconut Sugar (optional): If you want a touch more sweetness, add a teaspoon of coconut sugar. It’s up to you and also depends on how you serve it! If you like to dunk your French toast sticks in maple syrup, you may want to leave this out.
Tools and Equipment
Air Fryer: I made these vegan French toast sticks in the air fryer! If you have one, it’s definitely the way to go! The bread gets all toasty and crispy on the outside, and soft and warm on the inside without needing to add vegan butter or oil to fry the bread.
Griddle: If you don’t have an air fryer use a griddle pan or other fry pan to cook the French toast on either side. If you use a non-stick pan you won’t need to add any additional butter or oil.
Baking Sheet: Another option is to bake these in the oven! Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil, and spray with cooking spray. Then place your strips evenly on top.
How to Make Vegan French Toast Sticks – Step by Step
Air Fryer French Toast
Step 1: Cut your bread into thin strips. About 4 to 5 strips per slice of bread.
Step 2: Combine almond milk, cinnamon, vanilla, and coconut sugar in a shallow bowl. Whisk together with a fork. Dip each bread strip in the bowl until just coated.
Step 3: Place in the air fryer basket. Give enough space between each bread strip. Do not overlap the strips. Be sure that they are in one single layer without touching.
Step 4: Bake for 8 to 10 minutes at 375 F. They will be done when they are golden brown on both sides.
Vegan French Toast on the Griddle
Step 1: Cut your bread into thin strips. About 4 to 5 strips per slice of bread.
Step 2: Combine almond milk, cinnamon, vanilla, and coconut sugar in a shallow bowl. Whisk together with a fork. Dip each bread strip in the bowl until just coated.
Step 3: Heat your griddle on medium high heat. If using a non-stick griddle you do not need to add any oil, vegan butter, or cooking spray, but you can if you choose.
Step 4: Place French toast sticks on the preheated griddle. Don’t overcrowd or allow them to touch.
Step 5: Cook for 3-4 minutes per side or until golden brown on either side.
Vegan French in the Oven

Step 3: Heat your griddle on medium high heat. If using a non-stick griddle you do not need to add any oil, vegan butter, or cooking spray, but you can if you choose.
Step 4: Line baking sheet with aluminum foil. Spray with cooking spray. Place strips of bread on baking sheet without overcrowding, overlapping, or touching.
Step 5: Bake for 4 minutes, flip, and bake for an additional 4 minutes. If not quite baked and golden brown, bake for an additional 2 minutes.
Top Tips for Making Vegan French Toast Sticks
- Don’t overcrowd the bread sticks no matter what method you use. You want them to cook and get golden brown on all sides which won’t happen if they are too close to one another.
- Add your favorite flavorings and spices. These are simply flavored with a touch of cinnamon and vanilla, but you could add other warm spices such as cardamom, ginger, or nutmeg.
- Don’t soak the bread for too long. It can easily become too soggy, and won’t bake all the way through.
- Use a heavy duty sandwich bread or bakers bread to avoid your bread from becoming too soggy. A sourdough, or whole wheat will hold up well.
- Bake until golden brown on both sides and until the bread is crispy on the outside, but not wet on the inside. Cooking times may vary depending on your appliance.
How to Serve
- Top with fresh fruit such as raspberries, blueberries, or strawberries.
- Sprinkle with powdered sugar.
- Serve with a drizzle of maple syrup, or a small bowl for dipping (my kids favorite)!
- Top with vegan whipped coconut cream!
How to Store, Keep, and Reheat
Store any leftovers in an air tight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. It’s best eaten fresh and crispy.
Reheat: If you decide to warm these French toast sticks for later, I recommend popping them back in the air fryer to crisp up for 2 minutes at 350 F.
