This creamy high protein mango banana smoothie is naturally sweet and vegan. It’s a healthy way to start your day!

Mangoes are a naturally sweet and creamy tropical fruit. It makes them the perfect fruit for smoothies and naturally sweetened desserts.
I have had an abundance of mangoes I’ve been working my way through. The kids love them plain and simple sliced and peeled.
But I’ve been having fun experimenting with different types of recipes. I made this Mango Cucumber Salad earlier this week.
Since I had so many mangoes I chopped them into cubes and froze them for smoothies! With some frozen bananas in the freezer too I pulled together this super easy and delicious plant-based smoothie in minutes.
It’s just the thing you need if you want something healthier to quench your sweet tooth. It makes a quick and easy breakfast on the run!
It’s healthy, high in protein, and tastes like a milk shake without any added sugar!

Tools You’ll Need
In order to make a smoothie creamy I recommend using a high speed blender. I have a Vitamix that has a smoothie attachment. It makes creating smoothies super easy and simple.
All you need to do is fill the smoothie cup that comes with the blender with your ingredients and screw on the blade attachment to create the perfect smoothie. The cups come with tops, so you just need to screw on the top and take your smoothie with you when you’re on the go!
How to Make this Mango Banana Smoothie – Step by Step
Step 1: Fill your blender or smoothie cup in the following order: almond milk, coconut yogurt, protein powder, fresh mangoes, chopped frozen banana.
Step 2: Attach blender lid or smoothie attachment blade. Start on low and slowly increase speed until all ingredients are completely blended.
Note: My Vitamix has 10 speeds. I start at one and slowly bring the speed up to a 5 or 6 and allow it to blend for about 10 seconds. Then I slowly decrease the speed back to 1 before flipping the switch to off.
Do I have to use protein powder in this smoothie?
Absolutely, not! The added protein powder is for those who are looking for a meal replacement or breakfast smoothie.
If you’re making this for the kids or just want a simple and healthy smoothie, there’s no need to add the protein powder.
Is mango and banana a good combination?
Mango combined with banana is a match made in heaven. Both are tropical fruits and have a creamy texture. They are also both naturally high in sugar making it unnecessary to add any additional sweetness in the form of maple syrup or agave. Combined they make for a super smooth and creamy smoothie.
What if I don’t have coconut milk yogurt?
You can use a different type of dairy free yogurt such as soy or almond. If you don’t have any dairy free yogurt at all you can simply leave this ingredient out.
It creates a slightly richer creamier consistency but it isn’t a necessary ingredient. If the smoothie seems to thick without the yogurt you can add a ¼ cup more almond milk.
How to Serve and Keep
Serving Suggestion-If you’d like to make your smoothie fancy like me, you can top it with small chunks of mango, and a sprinkle of chia sees, and desiccated coconut.
I like to “beautify” my smoothies if I have the extra time, but you can sip this smoothie straight from your cup.
Freezing-If you’d like to make this smoothie the night before, so you can grab it and go in the morning, I recommend placing it in the freezer.
In the morning remove it from the freezer and transfer to the refrigerator. Depending on how long it takes you to get ready for your day, or when you want to enjoy your smoothie, it should be slightly defrosted and drinkable in about an hours time. If you need it drinkable sooner, place on your counter and allow it to defrost at room temperature.
Top Tips for Making the Perfect Mango Banana Smoothie
- Use frozen banana and frozen mango
- Use unsweetened almond milk and dairy free yogurt (this reduces the overall sugar)
- Use an unsweetened pea protein powder. I recommend using Trader Joe’s version or the Anthony’s brand. It doesn’t add any extra flavor.
- If you don’t want the extra protein, leave out the protein powder
- Place the frozen fruit in the blender first (or closest to the blade), then pour liquid ingredients over it. This will help make sure all the frozen pieces get nicely blended.
