Sweet and spicy, it’s everything you want in vegan honey mustard without the honey! Using dijon mustard, maple syrup, spices, and vinegar, this dressing pairs perfectly with healthy greens!

Honey Mustard has been my dressing of choice for as long as I can remember. I love that it’s a little spicy, has a bite, and a touch of sweetness. I’m also a big fan of it because it’s not a creamy dressing. I’m always opting for vinaigrettes, Italian, or going without any dressing at all.
This whole food plant-based vegan salad dressing is oil-free, virtually fat-free, and low in calories. It tastes great drizzled on fresh greens, spread on a sandwich, or used as a dip!
Finding vegan honey mustard at the store is tricky if not impossible. Most dressings are made with honey, and if you’re vegan you don’t consume honey. The store-bought dressings have a lot of added processed ingredients, not to mention a whole lot of oil and fat.

🥣 Ingredients and Notes
Dijon Mustard: I went with dijon mustard for this dressing because I like the added kick! You can also use yellow mustard or brown mustard.
Maple Syrup: This vegan honey alternative gives your foods a hint of sweetness. It’s not as thick as honey but still has a syrup consistency. The maple syrup in this recipe is what gives this dressing a hint of sweetness instead of honey. You can also use agave nectar.
Vinegar: The vinegar in this dressing turns the mustard into a vinaigrette that easily drizzles over your greens. If you like a thicker dressing leave the vinegar out or use a teaspoon instead of a tablespoon. Opt for white vinegar, apple cider vinegar, red wine vinegar, or white wine vinegar.
Spices: The added salt and garlic powder adds a bit more flavor, but are completely optional. The dijon mustard packs a lot of flavors all on its own.
📋 Step by Step Instructions
Step 1: Pour dijon mustard into a small bowl.
Step 2: Add maple syrup, vinegar, salt, and garlic powder.
Step 3: Whisk together until combined. Serve!
❓ FAQS
Honey is not considered vegan because it comes from bees which are animals. Some people who consider themselves plant-based still eat honey. When it comes to whether or not you decide to consume honey on a plant-based diet is completely up to you. If you purchase honey mustard from the store it will likely contain honey, but making your own “honey” mustard is a snap. All you need to do is sub maple syrup for honey! You can also use other sweet syrup-like substitutes such as agave. If you’re not opposed to consuming honey, by all means, use it in this recipe!
Most store-bought mustards are vegan unless they are specialty mustards such as honey mustard. Yellow mustard, brown mustard, and dijon mustard are typically vegan friendly but always look at the ingredient label of a product before purchasing.

💭 Expert Tips for Making Vegan Honey Mustard
- Use high-quality mustard. It really makes a difference when it comes to flavor.
- Use pure organic maple syrup. The other stuff is just corn syrup! Yuck!
- For a thinner consistency use vinegar. For a thicker dipping sauce, leave the vinegar out.
- Add a dash of salt and garlic powder, or leave it out completely. You can also add a dash of cayenne if you like it extra spicy or a dash of paprika for a smoky flavor.
📖 Variations
Creamy Dressing: For a creamier dressing, blend all of the ingredients together and add a ¼ cup of silken tofu, vegan mayo, or vegenaise.
Alternatives to Vinegar: If you’re not a fan of vinegar use fresh lemon juice, or lime juice.

I love this pairing of dijon mustard with maple syrup. Yes, I saw recipes with honey, but I have not tried something like this with maple syrup. Sound interesting and delicious!
