If you don’t know this about me already, I have a sweet tooth, BIG TIME! I also have two major weaknesses when it comes to sweet treats, chocolate and ice cream.

When I became a plant-based vegan I said good-bye to dairy which also meant saying good-bye to ice cream. Although ice cream was one of my favorite treats, I had to let it go for more reasons than one. Full of sugar, heavy cream, and extra fillers, ice cream was a habit I needed to break.

Letting go of ice cream was like saying good-bye to my best friend. Ice cream had been there for me in good times and bad.

When I came home from a challenging day at work, ice cream was there. When I finished a big project and wanted to celebrate, ice cream was there. When I was feeling alone and unsure about where my life was going, ice cream was there. Ice cream was always there.

For all the good times I had with ice cream, I knew it was an unhealthy relationship. While ice cream made me feel better in the moment, I was having sugar cravings. I couldn’t go a day without ice cream, or some sort of sugary sweet.

I really knew i needed to make a change when I began suffering from hypoglycemic reactions. My blood sugar would spike, then suddenly drop. I would break out into a sudden sweat, my hands would start shaking, my heart rate would rapidly increase, and on one occasion I fainted hitting my head on a bookcase. I had to be taken to the ER to be sure I didn’t have a concussion. With a little research I discovered that too much insulin was causing my blood sugar to drop too low. I didn’t have diabetes, but I was consuming too much sugar for my body to handle.

I had to do something, and saying good-bye to ice cream and refined sugar seemed like the logical choice.

But what is life without chocolate or ice cream I ask you? A very sad life I believe. Luckily, there’s chocolate nice cream! No dairy, no refined sugar, but all the creamy sweetness of real ice cream from frozen bananas.

Bananas still have sugar, but it’s natural sugar. In fact, bananas are high on the glycemic index. But when you compare chocolate nice cream to chocolate ice cream you’re decreasing the amount of total sugar, you’re getting 0 g of refined sugar, and you’re losing the added sugars that are produced in dairy.

Tools you’ll need to make Chocolate Nice Cream:

When I make nice cream I prefer using my food processor. It does a nice job of breaking down the bananas into pieces and combining the chocolate evenly.

If you don’t have a food processor but you have a good blender, it should still do the trick.

  • Before you make nice cream freeze 4 ripe and peeled bananas overnight.
  • TIP: I always have a stash of frozen bananas in my freezer. When our bananas start to brown, I peel them and put them in a freezer safe bag for those times we crave smoothies or nice cream.
  • Chop 4 frozen bananas into chunks.

  • Place the chunks in your food processor, and combine for about 2 minutes or until the bananas are broken into crumbles.
  • Pour in cocoa powder, and vanilla extract.
  • Pulse until the bananas, cocoa, and vanilla mixture is completely combined.
  • Optional: you can add a tablespoon of coconut milk or other dairy free milk if the ingredients need a bit more liquid to combine.

The sugars in nice cream are all natural sugars from bananas. Nice cream also doesn’t contain any dairy. While there is some controversy regarding the health benefits or lack there of with dairy here are a few facts…

  • Humans are the only species in the animal kingdom that consumes the milk of another animal.
  • 75% of humans are lactose intolerant.
  • Not all dairy products are created equal. While there are a good amount of vitamins and nutrients in whole milk, other dairy products such as butter, cheese, ice cream, and fruit yogurts do not have the same nutrient density.
  • Where your milk comes from also makes a big difference. Grass fed and pasture raised cows produce more nutrient rich milk.
  • Dairy is full of saturated fat, and saturated fat is linked to heart disease.
  • Dairy is linked to prostate cancer.

For more information on dairy I recommend reading this article from Healthline and Dr. Mary Hyman’s article about the risk of consuming too much dairy.

While I follow a plant-based vegan diet and do not consume any dairy, my family still has dairy in moderation. When I buy milk for my kids I’m selective, opting for organic pasture raised whole milk, and limiting cheese consumption. It’s all about moderation, and education. We do the best we can with the knowledge we have.

Both my kids and my husband love nice cream. My kids don’t even notice a difference between nice cream and regular ice cream. They love to eat it with a drizzle of almond butter, and a few peanuts on top.

My husband definitely notices the difference, but was surprised at how creamy and chocolatey it tasted without any dairy. He likes it best with chocolate chips, and peanuts.
