What is a plant-based diet?
Following a whole-food plant-based diet means consuming natural plant foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, tubers, and legumes. This means dairy products, eggs, meat, and seafood are excluded from the diet. A whole food plant-based diet also limits or excludes all cooking oils, refined sugars, and processed foods.
While it may seem that a plant-based diet is limited at first, you’ll soon find that starting a WFPB diet is easier than you think. There are numerous resources, recipes, tips, shopping lists, and more to help you get started. That’s where these excellent books come in handy!
What are the benefits of starting a plant-based diet?
There are three main reasons you may want to follow a plant-based diet. I choose a plant-based diet for all three of these reasons.
- Improve your health and well-being.
- Help the environment
- Promote animal welfare
As the books in my recommended list explain, a plant-based diet has the potential to prevent and, in some cases, reverse chronic conditions such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. In addition, a plant-based lifestyle promotes weight loss and increases your fiber intake, which can lower cholesterol and blood sugar levels.
Not only does a plant-based diet do a body good, but it also helps the environment by reducing your carbon footprint and promoting animal rights.
In the list below, you’ll find three categories of books.
- Nutritional Science Books: These books provide the scientific research behind the health benefits of a plant-based diet.
- Nutritional Program Books: These books provide the science and a program, and in many cases, recipes and meal plans to get you started.
- Cookbooks: These are simply cookbooks that provide delicious, healthy, easy-to-follow recipes that follow a whole food plant-based lifestyle.
These books are listed in no particular order or hierarchy.
