🥣 Ingredients and Notes
Fresh Organic Strawberries: Always go for organic if possible when buying strawberries. Strawberries are #1 on the EWG Dirty Dozen list. This means that non-organic strawberries have a high amount of pesticide.
Vegan Chocolate– Use your favorite vegan chocolate. I mentioned a few of my favorites above. Chocolate chips are the easiest to work with because they melt easily.
Valentine’s Sprinkles (optional): If it’s Valentine’s Day, decorate your strawberries with heart sprinkles, but you can also decorate them with chopped nuts, coconut flakes, or other types of sprinkles, depending on the occasion.
👩🏻🍳 How to Make Vegan Chocolate-Covered Strawberries
- Wash the strawberries with the stems under cold water, and pat them dry with a paper towel or clean kitchen towel.
- Bring a saucepan filled with two inches of water to a boil. Reduce the heat, and set a glass bowl with chocolate chips on top, ensuring the bowl covers the rim of the saucepan but does not touch the water. You want the bowl tightly fitted across the top of the saucepan so that the steam does not escape. The steam will slowly and gently melt the chocolate chips. Stir until completely melted.
- Hold the stem of each strawberry and dip the strawberry into the melted chocolate. Shake off any excess chocolate, and set the strawberry on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Top with sprinkles of choice.
- Transfer to the refrigerator to harden for at least 15 minutes. Then, remove it from the refrigerator and keep it in a cool, dry place.
📝 Expert Tips
- Buy large plump strawberries with the stem attached
- Make sure to read the ingredient label on the chocolate before you buy, to ensure it is vegan and free of processed ingredients
- The double boiler method will help prevent the chocolate from seizing and becoming a lumpy mess. I prefer this method as I have more control.
- You can also microwave the chocolate chips in 30-second increments, stirring between each increment.
- Allow the strawberries to set in the refrigerator, but remove them after 15-20 minutes and store them in a cool, dry place until ready to serve.
❓ FAQS
This recipe is healthier than most because of the quality of the used chocolate. I highly recommend buying organic certified vegan fair trade chocolate chip or chocolate bars for melting. This ensures you are getting the highest quality ingredients.
Vegan chocolate melts just like milk chocolate. Vegan chocolate is often made from cocoa powder and cocoa butter. Cocoa butter is not actually dairy butter, but a type of oil that comes from the cocoa bean. This allows the chocolate to melt.
If you buy dark chocolate with a high cocoa content, you’ll eata food high in soluble fiber and rich in iron, magnesium, copper, and manganese. Dark chocolate is also high in antioxidants. Some studies have shown that dark chocolate can improve blood flow, raise HDL (good cholesterol), and protect LDL (bad cholesterol). It may also reduce the risk of heart disease and improve brain function. However, most chocolate comes with a lot of sugar! Eating in moderation and consuming high-quality dark chocolate is best for the most health benefits.
Fresh organic strawberries are naturally healthy and delicious! They are high in fiber, vitamin C, manganese, folate, and potassium. They’re also rich in antioxidants, like chocolate! Studies have indicated that strawberries may decrease your risk of heart disease and cancer, as well as help, regulate blood sugar levels.
Enjoy Life Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips: These are subtly sweet and melt perfectly. They’re great for making cookies or melting like in these vegan chocolate-covered strawberries.
Hu Vegan Chocolate Bars: These chocolate bars are vegan, so no dairy, but they’re also non-GMO, with no emulsifiers, soy, gluten, refined sugar, cane sugar, or sugar alcohols.
No Whey Foods: These vegan, gluten- and allergy-friendly chocolate bars. Break them up into pieces to melt for candy-making.
🍓 Serving Suggestions
While the chocolate is still wet, add some sprinkles and customize them for the holiday! Heart sprinkles for Valentine’s Day, pastel sprinkles for Easter, or green and white sprinkles for Christmas. Another beautiful presentation is to add a drizzle of vegan white chocolate.
🫙 Storage
Chocolate-covered strawberries are best enjoyed fresh the day you make them. If you have extra, do not store them in the refrigerator. When stored in the refrigerator, the strawberries will sweat and release moisture, becoming mushy, and the chocolate will lose its hard shell. Instead, gently cover and store them at room temperature. Enjoy within 1-2 days.
